This shows a commonweath
quality swimmer mid way through his 1500m (15.30) although not the best example
of performance swimming I have seen. An excellent display of power and technique.
Although the swimmer is slightly over rotating he is benefiting from the breathing
zone and the over extension of the left arm by the increase in stroke length.
In short he moves further using his left arm than his right arm.
This example provides a good over view of how the head position can damage
a good stroke. Excellent nearside entry only to be spoilt by an over rotation
to breath. This pulls the centre line deep into the water and legs to spread
Remedies
- This stroke would drastically improve if the head were slighly lower in
the water and the turned a lot less during the breathing phase.
In this sequence the athlete appears a little overcautious and doesn't flow
naturally. It is important to remeber to apply small amounts of power in the
pull phase in order to create the velocity needed for good swimmer
Remedies
- Relax a little more; don't see the swimming as an evil fiend
- stretch forwards instead of up and out
- slighly inrease the rate at which the recover take place
The athlete, during
the drive forward phase submerges under the waters at points. Although a reasonable
all round stroke, this let down by the legs parting through the core of the
stroke and a weak left shoulder.
Remedies
- The arms, Some strengthing work, perhaps rowing once a week or some stretch
cords.
- Legs, some kick board work to tidy the legs
- Work on the arm entry phase of the swim. There seems to be little conviction
of the stroke.
In this clip the swimmer pushes off the wall and makes the effort to hold
their breath for four strokes out the turn. Due to poor technique and lack
of balance in the water the breathing pattern signifiacntly effect the stroke.
Remedies
- The arms cross the centre line of the body and this should be corrected
first as it will stabilse the body.
- Legs, some kick board work to tidy the legs
- sensible breathing technique which should be re-inforced from poolside
